About the book
Author Julia Dean-Richards Illustrator Fran O’Boyle
Julia Dean-Richards is a writer and performer of poetry and stories. Snailbeach Tails is her first novel – a fantasy inspired by the Shropshire landscape and the people who make it special. Julia often finds alternative ways of presenting her work and is interested in the layers that collaboration can bring. Extracts from Snailbeach Tails have been adapted to be performed at festivals, schools and events.
Julia talks about the process of writing Snailbeach Tails – “Breast cancer was my back pack; the contents of which showed me how challenges could be embraced and made into something wonderful. I reached into my bag and drew out love and imagination. Two years of intravenous treatment turned into an opportunity to explore these wonders; dancing with my eyes closed through a hazy half-light.
On my journey I met (and continue to meet) many people who provided strength, beauty and skill – three in particular: Ray, Fran and Simon. Fran O’Boyle illustrated, Simon Cresswell composed music and Ray Jacobs designed the beautiful book to carry the tale.”
The phenomenon is 270 page illustrated book written for grown-ups who believe in the power of stories, and a performance which sets hearts free. And the tale goes on.
Says Dog – “If stories is told from the heart, and those who read them have open minds, stories will find the secret doorway that leads from one soul to another, and stroll right in.”
